FAQs
What is MCT?
MCT means Medium-Chain Triglycerides, a type of fatty acid found in foods like coconut oil with many health benefits. Unlike longer-chain fatty acids, MCTs are rapidly broken down and absorbed into the body. That makes them a fast energy source and less likely to be stored as fat.
Where can you get MCT?
MCT can be found in whole foods like coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and dairy products, although their MCT composition varies. Coconut oil, for example, has approximately 55% MCT oil, palm kernel oil has around 54% MCT oil, while butter has something like 8% MCT oil.
What are the different kinds of MCT in coconut Oil?
The different fatty acids found in coconut oil are Caproic Acid (C6), Caprylic Acid (C8), Capric Acid (C10), and Lauric Acid (C12). Caprylic Acid (C8) is considered the most efficient source of MCT Oil after C6 because it is easier for the body to digest and break down into a quick and steady fuel or energy for the brain and body. It does not spend much time processing in the liver hence, C8 molecules are quick to show its powerful effects on the body.
In one study, Pure C8 (Caprylic Acid) MCT Oil was found to have the highest net ketogenic effect on the body as compared to other MCT Oils: about 3X more ketogenic than C10 (Capric Acid) and about 6X more ketogenic than C12 (Lauric Acid).
They may be differentiated according to their primary benefits in the following illustration.
Caproic Acid (C6) | Caprylic Acid (C8) | Capric Acid (C10) | Lauric Acid (C12) |
---|---|---|---|
FAST BUT RISKY | ENERGY BOOSTER | ANTIFUNGAL PHENOMENON | MICROBE FIGHTER |
Caproic Acid (C6) boosts the quickest production of ketones among the MCTs. It aids in hunger suppression but it has an unpleasant odor and is also associated with the most risk of upset stomach and loose bowels. | Caprylic Acid (C8) is the most powerful form and naturally efficient source of MCT when it comes to quick and steady energy for the brain and body. | Capric Acid (C10) has many of the same properties as Caprylic Acid (C8) but generally takes a bit longer for the body to process into ketones. | Lauric Acid (C12) is a major component of coconut oil. Lauric Acid possesses antimicrobial action. Since it has bigger molecules, it takes longer to break down. |
How does MCT Oil differ from Virgin coconut Oil and Regular Coconut Oil?
MCT Oil, Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO), and Regular Coconut Oil are sometimes mistaken to be the same. While they are all low-carb ingredients often touted as superfoods, they differ in many ways.
Coconut MCT Oil | Regular Coconut Oil and VCO |
---|---|
It is 100% Medium-Chain Triglycerides or MCTs. | They contain both Long and Medium-Chain Triglycerides (LCTs & MCTs). |
It is only and primarily a food supplement known for brain health and energy, for weight loss/management, among other benefits. | They are used for both food and non-food purposes: for cooking, beauty and skin care, etc. VCO is also used as a food supplement. |
It is more easily absorbed and does not require bile or pancreatic enzymes to be digested. It is transported right to the liver to be used as an immediate source of energy. | They go through several other digestive steps and are transported around the body before getting brought to the liver. The process is slow before the energy can be used by the body. |
It is odorless and flavorless. | VCO has coconut oil odor and taste. |
It remains liquid at room temperature. | They may become solid at room temperature. |
Can you just take Regular Coconut Oil or Virgin coconut Oil instead of Pure C8 MCT Oil?
While Coconut Oil contains approximately 55% MCT Oil, only around 13% is C8 and C10 (combined), and the 42% or thereabout is C12. One would need to consume a much higher amount of Regular Coconut Oil or Virgin Coconut Oil to get the same effects as taking Pure C8 MCT Oil. It means that ENJOY HEALTH COCONUT MCT OIL PURE C8 is nearly ten times more concentrated than VCO and Regular Coconut Oil.
1 Cup of VCO = 1 Tablespoon of Pure C8 MCT Oil
What is the recommended dosage in taking MCT Oil?

As MCT oil may result in some minor side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and an upset stomach, it is recommended to start your intake with a small dose like 1 teaspoon, and increase intake slowly to tablespoon once the body tolerates it.
